Memorable DOT Moments: American Navy Crew Empowers ReachUp! Participants
On Friday the 13th of July, 2012 a crew from the United States Navy accompanied me and my DOT colleagues in delivering ReachUp! at my center in Chumani, Coast region.
In the course of delivering the ReachUp! program, I have had great opportunities for sharing the little knowledge I have with my community for the purpose of creating sustainable livelihoods. Maple Leaf Shoes is the brain child of a group of youth based in Machakos town who came together to create a source of income through which they could earn while utilizing their unique set of skills and knowledge. ReachUp! program has positively impacted lives of several youths in Kisauni Constituency, Coast province. A good example is Ibrahim Shoka, who took the training between September and October 2011, at Wema Centre- Bamburi and his life has changed for the better.
Ibrahim Shoka is a 24 year old Kenyan who resides in a small Village in the outskirts of Kisauni Constituency, called Majaoni. He is the 5th born in a family of nine and all his other siblings are jobless, making him the sole bread winner. Ibrahim completed his primary level education in 2009 but could not proceed to secondary school due to financial constraints.
