ReachUp! program has positively impacted lives of several youths in Kisauni Constituency, Coast province. A good example is Ibrahim Shoka, who took the training between September and October 2011, at Wema Centre- Bamburi and his life has changed for the better.
Ibrahim Shoka is a 24 year old Kenyan who resides in a small Village in the outskirts of Kisauni Constituency, called Majaoni. He is the 5th born in a family of nine and all his other siblings are jobless, making him the sole bread winner. Ibrahim completed his primary level education in 2009 but could not proceed to secondary school due to financial constraints. In January 2011, he joined The Wema Centre Vocational School where he took a one year Certificate course in Tailoring and Dressmaking. Its while in the Vocational school that he got the opportunity to enroll in the ReachUp! program.
Ibrahim successfully completed the one month training program in October 2011, and immediately started reaping its benefits!! Through saving skills gained from ReachUp! Ibrahim and his friend were able to save enough cash, and by January 2012 the duo bought a Motorcycle. Since then, the two have been using the motorcycle as a Boda boda to ferry local residents from the interior to Bamburi town center.
Ibrahim on average makes 1,500/= per day. He uses 300 to buy his eleven member family dinner, gives 400 to his partner, 300/= to refuel the motorcycle, and invests 200/= in a 10 member merry-go-round (members of the merry- go- round are fellow cyclists). Having catered for a day's needs, he then saves the remaining cash in his personal bank account- an account he opened three months ago during financial literacy training, which was then offered by Equity Bank to ReachUp! participants.
ReachUp! has helped Ibrahim shape up his life; Ibrahim says that he can now comfortably take care of his family, however large it is. In addition, he is happy that he joined a merry go round, and is able to also save in his bank account- things he says would have sounded imaginary had he not undergone the ReachUp! Training. His broad objective however is to start a wholesale shop in his hometown, something he wants to achieve by December 2013 and at DOT, we remain committed and dedicated to ensuring that Ibrahim, and many more like him, achieve their goals in life.
