Over the next 3 months DOT Kenya will host two volunteers from a Youth Global Xchange in partnership with the British Council in Malindi, Kenya. The volunteers will work together with DOT Kenya Interns based in Malindi in advocacy, project management and ways participants can improve or start their projects.
Volunteer James Kitti Chappa is a 24 year old with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Community Development from Egerton University. He has been an active volunteer at Malindi Education and Development Association - MEDA, a local community based organization dealing with the improvement of education in Malindi district. His hobbies include watching movies, listening to music, travelling and having fun. He says "In life I like helping other people especially the poor so that they may improve their standards of living. I am also a human rights activist apart from having keen interests in conserving the environment".
James applied for the Youth Global Xchange program so that he may interact with people from different cultural backgrounds, learn from them and understand them with the view of becoming an active global citizen.
During his engagement in the Youth Global Xchange program, James hopes to develop skills in becoming a better global citizen, improve his entrepreneurship skills and form active UK-Kenyan youth networks that are aimed at addressing the challenges facing the youth of the 21st century.
Volunteer Cecile Anne Teuma is a 21 year old from Gibraltar who recently finished her degree in Criminology and Psychology at Southampton Solent. Cecile leads a fairly active social life, while also keeping herself busy by going to the gym, working in family's business (a high street pharmacy), and spending time with family and friends. Cecile decided to apply for the Youth Global Xchange because of her interest in gaining experience and an understanding different cultures, as well as giving a helping hand to underprivileged people in whichever small way she can.
Cecil says, "What attracted me first to Youth Global Xchange was the possibility of travelling to a different country, and despite my fears, the prospect of visiting Kenya is certainly something I am looking forward to immensely."
About the Youth Global Xchange
The Youth Global Xchange programme gives young people the opportunity to work on projects tackling important issues, making an impact overseas as well as back on home soil. As a volunteer, youth work in a community organization on issues that matter. The projects are designed with the host organizations so youth can be sure that what they're doing is really useful to them. On the overseas leg of the experience, youth will be living and working in a new culture and learning about the different issues that affect them.
